Alita is the first motion capture film I’ve seen in which the motion capture character seemed real, despite her big eyes. In Avatar the characters looked animated. Alita’s character plunges boldly into the “uncanny valley” that animators talk about—and emerges with photorealistic effect, even though the person being depicted is plainly not a human being in any ordinary sense of the term. Alita also shows how important quality of execution is. There have been a zillion movies made about the Cute Teenage Girl Who Discovers She Has Powers. And about future dystopian cities. And about cyborgs (starting with RoboCop I suppose). And about First Love. And about father-daughter relationships. Yada yada. There’s nothing original in Alita in terms of thematic content.

I would hope that other Dads could step in and help or show new dads how do this. It isn’t complex, and there are always cool pro-tips that help enhance the experience (my favorite is having the new one UNDER the old one so when you pull out the gross one, you can wipe and set him back down into the new in a single motion.) We can act all tough and macho, but I’m telling you if another dad asked me, I’d drop everything and teach him. First rule of dadhood: Your accomplishments are adorable. But you didn’t squeeze that thing out after lugging it around nine months feeling like a bloated minivan. As dads, we could move heaven and earth (and some of us try) but nothing holds a candle to mommy’s efforts. You can show her you’re TRYING, but you’ll never be “caught up” so it’s futile.
