My grandfather passed away before I was old  FedEx Mickey Mouse no day off shirt enough to really sit down and ask about the war in a mature manner, something that I now have mixed feelings about. Not that I’m not sad he passed away, I loved my grandfather and he passed away in a pretty terrible and drawn-out way (stomach cancer) that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. But, there’s also this worry in the back of my mind that I would have found out things that might have complicated my feelings for a man I only ever knew as warm, kind and gregarious, had he lived long enough for me to ask him as an adult. This means that I mostly have recollections from my childhood of the tidbits of information he did give out, and secondhand information mostly from my father and grandmother. I have only recently, together with my father, started to look into my grandfather’s wartime history.

I would hope that other Dads could step in and help or show new dads how do this. It isn’t complex, and there are always cool pro-tips that help enhance the experience (my favorite is having the new one UNDER the old one so when you pull out the gross one, you can wipe and set him back down into the new in a single motion.) We can act all tough and macho, but I’m telling you if another dad asked me, I’d drop everything and teach him. First rule of dadhood: Your accomplishments are adorable. But you didn’t squeeze that thing out after lugging it around nine months feeling like a bloated minivan. As dads, we could move heaven and earth (and some of us try) but nothing holds a candle to mommy’s efforts. You can show her you’re TRYING, but you’ll never be “caught up” so it’s futile.
